The Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) is an element in a GSM network responsible for the delivery of short messages (SMS). It is responsible to route SMS messages and regulate the process.

A SMS center (SMSC) is responsible for handling the SMS operations of a wireless network. When an sms message is sent from mobile phone, it first reaches SMS center which then forwards it to the destination. If the recipient is unavailable, SMSC will store the message and will forward the SMS when the recipient is available or expiry period is exceeded.
